Chelsea given £35m green light to complete most important transfer that no one is talking about

Chelsea have done some good business in the summer transfer window and there are more signings to come.

Xavi Simons looks set to be the seventh new signing at Stamford Bridge, with Alejandro Garnacho potentially the eighth after Chelsea opened talks with Manchester United for the Argentinian.

It has, once again, been quite the overhaul of players in the blue part of west London as Enzo Maresca looks to make a concerted Premier League title bid this season after falling short last year, having initially kept pace with Liverpool in the first half of the campaign.

Maresca may look to go back into the market after it was confirmed that influential defender Levi Colwill had suffered an ACL injury. The Blues are well stocked in that area of the pitch, but when looking at the likes of new signing Jorrel Hato, Trevoh Chalobah, Tosin Adarabioyo, Wesley Fofana, Josh Acheampong and youngster Aaron Anselmino, do Chelsea have enough to compete at the top level given the injury record of some and the inexperience of others?

Signing another defender may now be imperative, but there is another position that has not been talked about - goalkeeper.

Many pundits last season, when Chelsea were flying high, believed the Blues were a goalkeeper and a striker short of really challenging for the top honours.

Joao Pedro and Liam Delap have been added to the striker ranks, but nothing has changed between the sticks.

Robert Sanchez was excellent during the triumphant Club World Cup campaign, following on from a strong second half of the 2024/25 Premier League season too.

And he thoroughly deserves to go into the season as the club's No.1 because of that. But there is no denying he has been shaky in the past and although Maresca trusts him, a tried and tested statement goalkeeper signing could be the difference when it comes to winning the title. Just look at what Liverpool did with Alisson Becker.

football.london suggested Chelsea make a move for Italy No.1 Gianluigi Donnarumma way back in December, ahead of the January transfer window.

I wrote in a piece back then : "What about Mike Maignan at AC Milan, or even Gianluigi Donnarumma at Paris Saint-Germain? Both would be huge upgrades and would be available for cut-price deals in January with their contracts having just 18 months left to run."

Chelsea did go on to look at Maignan this summer, but walked away from a deal with Milan looking for too high a price. Now Donnarumma looks like he could be up for sale too.

He has just one year left on his contract with PSG and the French champions are trying to complete a deal to sign Lucas Chevalier from Lille for £35million. PSG are hoping to finalise a deal before the UEFA Super Cup final with Tottenham next Wednesday and that could lead to Donnarumma leaving the French capital.

Manchester United are reported to have "registered their interest" in the 26-year-old and Chelsea would do well to make their move too, before it's too late.
