Haq, starring Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam, is inspired by Shah Bano’s case in which she fought against Muslim divorced women’s right to alimony and triple talaq. Shah Bano Begum, an Indian Muslim woman fought against her husband Mohd. Ahmed Khan who divorced her and did not pay maintenance for her and their children.
Ahmed Khan, a renowned advocate in Indore, and Shah Bano Begum got married in 1932 and went on to have five children. After 14 years of their marriage, Khan married a younger woman and divorced Shah Bano through triple talaq. He also refused to pay her maintenance after the divorce. Her husband argued that a divorced Muslim woman was not entitled to maintenance beyond the iddah period, according to Muslim Personal Law, and that his obligations were discharged by the payment of Mehr (a pre-agreed sum given to the wife).
The Supreme Court, in 1985, passed a landmark judgment in Shah Bano Case which empowered a divorced woman, under Muslim law, to get maintenance after the Iddat period from her husband. However, Rajiv Gandhi passed legislation that reversed the judgement, resulting in a great setback.
Rashmika Mandanna’s The Girlfriend, directed by actor-filmmaker Rahul Ravindran, also stars Dheekshith and Rao Ramesh in key roles. The film follows a postgraduate student, Bhooma Devi (Rashmika), who gets manipulated into falling in love with Vikram (Dheekshith), the college heartthrob. She soon finds herself in a toxic relationship.
