Trump administration offers up to $1000 cash bonuses to police for immigration arrests

The Trump administration has announced quarterly cash bonuses of up to $1,000 for state and local police officers who meet immigration-arrest targets, expanding its enforcement push through the 287(g) program. The Department of Homeland Security ( DHS) said Tuesday the scheme applies to officers deputized under a partnership with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE).

DHS said about 8,500 officers across 40 states are currently part of the task-force model of the program, which allows local police to enforce federal immigration laws during routine duties. Another 2,000 officers are in training.

Under the new plan, officers can receive between $500 and $1,000 each quarter, depending on the percentage of ICE-directed arrests they make. The initiative adds to other federal reimbursements already covering salaries, benefits, and some overtime costs for 287(g) participants. ICE is also offering hiring bonuses of up to $50,000 as it seeks to expand its ranks by 10,000 officers and agents.

“We encourage all state and local law enforcement agencies to sign a 287(g) agreement now,” ICE Deputy Director Madison Sheahan said in a statement. “By joining forces with ICE, you’re not just gaining access to these unprecedented reimbursement opportunities — you’re becoming part of a national effort to ensure the safety of every American family.”

The payments are being supported by a Republican-led spending bill passed in July, which allocated more than $150 billion for immigration and border security. The cost of covering arrest bonuses and salary reimbursements was not specified.

Political consultant Mike Madrid, co-founder of the Republican group Lincoln Project, criticized the policy, telling Bloomberg, it creates “a bounty that would weaponize and federalize state and local law enforcement agencies.”

Federal data shows ICE made about 168,000 arrests nationwide between January and August 23 this year, with deportations totaling about 150,000 people during the same period.
