Srinagar: Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi in Jammu and Kashmir was marred by controversy as lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha refused to shift the official holiday for the festival to Saturday from Friday, as per the lunar calendar, as requested by the Omar Abdullah-led National Conference government.
Sakina Itoo, a minister in Abdullah's government, said it was unjust that Eid-e-Milad was not being observed as a holiday on the correct date in J&K.
"What does 'subject to appearance of the moon' mean if it is not followed? Despite repeated requests from the elected government to shift the holiday no action has been taken. This is playing with the emotions of the people. Such decisions should be at the helm of the elected government," Itoo posted on X.
The CM supported the education minister, stating that the calendar printed by the government press is very clear that Muslim holidays are subject to the appearance of the moon. "It means that the holiday is subject to change depending upon the Moon being sighted. The deliberate decision by the unelected government to not shift the holiday is inconsiderate and designed to hurt the sentiments of the people," said Abdullah.
Earlier, the LG's administration had refused to change the Eid holiday as well.
Separately, on Friday, some worshipers damaged the plaque inside the Hazratbal shrine in Srinagar which had been installed after the recently concluded renovation. The worshipers objected to the 'Ashoka Emblem' inscribed on the plaque inside the mosque. Many men and women worshipers were seen damaging the plaque with stones.
"I'm not a religious scholar but in Islam, idol worship is strictly forbidden - the gravest of sins. The foundation of our faith is Tawheed... Placing a sculpted figure, at the revered Hazratbal Dargah goes against this very belief. Sacred spaces must reflect only the purity of Tawheed, nothing else," National Conference MLA from Srinagar Tanvir Sadiq wrote on X.
J&K Waqf Board chairperson Darakshan Andrabi of BJP alluded to the National Conference for the incident at the shrine and demanded exemplary action and slapping of Public Safety Act against the worshippers. The shrine is managed by the Waqf Board.
"Emblem is our identity and honour. Goons of a political party damaged the plaque and these are the people who were involved in stone pelting and militancy in the past. I urge our security forces and police to take exemplary action against these hooligans," Andrabi said at a presser in Srinagar. A few days ago, she was crowned at the shrine after its renovation.
