In a disturbing incident reported on Monday morning, four men in an SUV allegedly chased and assaulted a group of 11 bikers near Gurgaon’s Kherki Daula toll plaza, smashing a Kawasaki Z900 worth over Rs 8 lakh and injuring at least one rider.
The victims claim the attack was unprovoked and have also alleged negligence by police in filing their complaint.
According to the bikers, the assailants — apparently enraged after one of them overtook the SUV and may have made a gesture — followed the group in a black Scorpio, eventually cornering them under the Dwarka Expressway flyover.
“The SUV was being driven rashly and tried to disbalance some of the bikers. We don't know what provoked them,” said Hardik Sharma, a 27-year-old software developer from Hisar, who filed the police complaint. “What we thought would be a calm ride turned into chaos.”
Abuses hurled; bikers attacked
The bikers had gathered near Ambience Mall around 7am for an early morning ride to Manesar. Around 7:30am, the incident took a violent turn when the four men allegedly exited their vehicle, hurled abuses, and began attacking the bikers.
“We stopped to avoid confrontation. They pulled off our helmets, punched us, and tried to identify who had overtaken them. One of us kept saying, ‘Bhaiya, sorry,’ but they weren’t listening,” Sharma said.
Sharma suffered injuries to his thigh, wrists, and hands. He said the attackers also brandished knives and threatened to kill them before turning their rage to his sports bike, smashing it repeatedly with the bat.
The bikers managed to reach the toll plaza and flagged down police officials. However, Sharma alleged it took over six hours to determine which police station had jurisdiction over the area.
“We waited for nearly half an hour at the toll. No one helped. It was extremely frustrating,” Sharma said.
GoPro footage captures attack
One of the bikers had a GoPro camera mounted on his vehicle, which captured part of the assault. The footage, as reviewed by ToI, shows two men — one in yellow shorts and a grey T-shirt, and another in a red sleeveless vest — beating the riders while hurling abuses. A third man is seen clicking pictures of the bike number plates.
“We tried to de-escalate the situation, but they started throwing punches. Most of the bikers ran. I fled too but returned when I saw one of our friends was stuck. Then they caught me,” Sharma said. “I even apologised for something I didn’t do, but they swung a baseball bat at me. Fortunately, it hit my helmet and not my head.”
Eventually, the FIR was registered at Sector 37 police station under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for offences including criminal intimidation, use of deadly weapons, wrongful restraint, rash driving, and endangering life.
Police, however, denied any delay. “The complainant was taken to a hospital for a medical examination and treatment. An investigation is underway,” an official statement read. “Crucial leads have been gathered, and the suspects have been identified. They will be apprehended shortly.”
AI-based facial recognition helps trace suspects
The group of bikers, meanwhile, used a paid AI tool called FaceCheck ID to match visuals from the GoPro footage with social media profiles. They have submitted these findings, along with the video evidence, to the police.
While the investigation is ongoing, the case has raised serious questions about road rage, civic safety, and police responsiveness in one of the NCR’s busiest highway corridors.
