Incessant rains cause flooding, traffic snarls in north Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram | Incessant rains lashed several towns and high ranges in northern Kerala, causing inundation and traffic snarls on Saturday morning.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted extremely heavy rainfall in northern districts of the state, including Kasaragod, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Wayanad for the day.

However, no casualties or significant destruction were reported, authorities said.

Both Wayanad and Kozhikode experienced intense rainfall throughout Friday night. There was a slight let-up in the heavy rains in the morning hours.

District authorities in Kozhikode are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to evacuate people living in highranges and areas adjacent to waterbodies to safer locations in case of emergency.

As per the figures of the state Agriculture Department, a significant crop loss of Rs 44 crore was reported in Kozhikode district alone due to the widespread rains received there since May.

According to a forcast issued by the IMD on Saturday morning, moderate rainfall with strong surface wind speed occasionally reaching up to 40 kmph (in Gusts) is likely to occur at one or two places in all districts of Kerala.
