Jessie J says that she thinks her breast cancer diagnosiscould have come to 'slow her down' in life amid a busy time juggling her return to music andparenting her two-year-old son, Sky. “Maybe this has happened to go: slow your roll, girl, let’s have a little reassessment,” she said to The Sunday Times this weekend.
The singer, 37, revealed in April that she had been diagnosed with early breast cancer after finding a lump on her breast, which was discovered to be a 5cm tumour, and she would need a mastectomy to remove it.
And while the surgery was successful and all of the cancer was removed, Jessie says the fight still isn't over. “People think, once you’ve got the all-clear, now it’s done," she explained. “But I’ve got another surgery [to improve the symmetry of her implant with her other breast] and I need to heal, so I have to figure out the rest of this year,” continued the singer. The health update from Jessie, who says it helps her to talk openly about her struggles, comes after Kerry Katona revealed her devastating health condition.
Jessie shared in April that she had been diagnosed with cancer, after finding a lump on her breast which doctors discovered to be a 5cm tumour.

Sharing how living with cancer has her feeling every emotion under the sun, Jessie also recalled one incident recently where she was left uncontrollably crying. “Mum was massaging my boob for me, because I can’t touch the scars. And I started sobbing, ‘I can’t believe this has happened.’ She was like, ‘I wish it was me,’ and then I’m crying, she’s crying …,” said Jessie, who added how glad she is that her mum isn’t the one suffering.
Jessie shared her cancer diagnosis via a video posted to Instagram earlier this year, where she admitted to “not processing” the news. “I was diagnosed with early breast cancer, I’m highlighting the word early; cancer sucks in any form, but I’m holding onto the word early,” she said in the video.
“I’ve been in and out of tests throughout this whole period. I just wanted to be open and share it, one because, selfishly, I do not talk about it enough. I am not processing it because I’m working so hard. I also know how much sharing in the past has helped me, with other people giving me their love and support, I’m an open book. It breaks my heart that so many people are going through so much similar and worse, that’s the bit that killed me.”
The artist shares her son Sky with her partner of four years Chanan Safir Colman, and has recently admitted it’s been a struggle not being able to parent him as normal while she recovers from surgery. “I’m not allowed to pick Sky up for a few months and that has been a difficult adjustment, I just want to hold him like this and spin around.
"But in the bigger picture it’s a small sacrifice to have my health and to still be here,” she said last month. Jessie continued, “The day will come I can lift him up for a cuddle. I can’t wait for that day. That day is what gets me through these days. These days are weird.”
Before learning of her cancer diagnosis, Jessie returned to music earlier this year with new singles Living My Best Life and No Secrets. And while her fifth studio album has taken longer than expected amid the health crisis, it’s set to be released later this year, with her third single this year; Believe In Magic, out on August 29th.
