On Tuesday night, Channel 5viewers watched as actor Matthew Lewis took on the role of Canon Daniel Clement in Murder Before Evensong.

He's joined by the likes of Amanda Redman, Amit Shah and Adam James in the series, which was heavily filmed in the West Midlands.

The first episode of the murder mystery thriller, which is inspired by the first book in Reverend Richard Coles Canon Clement Mysteries series, had people on the edge of their seats within the first opening minutes of the show as a dead body was found.

As the programme flashed back in time, people were then introduced to the multiple characters in Champton village, who all seem to be harbouring secrets and grievances of their own.

However, as the show began people watching were quick to share their thoughts on social media, with many expressing their praise for the series.

Taking to X, one person said: "Enjoying Murder before Evensong. Nice and cosy, with some good characters." Someone else wrote: "@RevRichardcol Murder before Evensong on Channel 5, excellent. Well done."

Another viewer added: "Bit of a Midsomer feel about it but almost quintessentially English….Which is nice!"

Someone else shared: "Decent cast, I haven't read the book but I'm liking the story so far." Another person commented: "Loving this #MurderBeforeEvensong @channel5_tv"

One viewer added: "This is definitely a crossover between Granchester and Agatha Christie. And I for one. Love it"

Speaking about the crime-drama, actor Matthew Lewis had nothing but praise when he spoke about watching it back.

He commented: "I've really enjoyed watching the series. I had about three days off the entire shoot, so I'm actually quite surprised by how much of the series I'm not in.

"When I watched the series back, I thought, 'When on earth did they film all this?' To see everybody else's work was really cool, and one of the first things I said during filming was how lucky I was to work with the calibre of actors we have in large supporting roles and guest roles.

"I knew we had a strong supporting cast, but to watch the scenes I didn't see or film was a real treat. I often say I'd watch my own work more if someone could make a super-edit without any of my scenes, so I can watch everyone else be brilliant."

Murder Before Evensong continues next Tuesday (October 14) on Channel 5 from 9pm.
