If you’ve filed your Income Tax Return (ITR) on time for the assessment year 2025-26 but your refund still hasn’t arrived, you are not alone. Many taxpayers experience delays due to some frequent, easily overlooked errors. Here are the main reasons your ITR refund might be delayed:
1. No E-Verification of ITRFiling your ITR is only the first step. Unless you complete e-verification (either through OTP, net-banking, Aadhaar, or other approved modes), the Income Tax Department will not process your return, and the refund process will not begin.
2. PAN and Aadhaar Not Linked CorrectlyIt is mandatory to link your PAN with your Aadhaar. Any discrepancies in name spelling, date of birth, or other details, or failure to complete the linking can halt the entire refund process. Always check that both are linked properly and details match exactly.
3. Inconsistencies in DocumentsRefunds can be delayed if data in your ITR does not match what’s in Form 26AS, Form 16, or the Annual Information Statement (AIS). For example, if there’s a TDS entry in Form 26AS that you haven’t mentioned in your return, the department may ask for clarification and withhold your refund.
4. False Claims or Incomplete InformationClaiming deductions, exemptions, or refunds without proper documentation or justification can result in your return being picked up for scrutiny. Especially for large refunds or unusual claims, the department may hold your return for further checks, causing delays—or outright rejection if discrepancies are found.
5. Incorrect or Unverified Bank Account DetailsYour refund is credited to your bank account, so it is crucial that your account number, IFSC code, and other details are correct—and that your bank account is verified on the income tax portal. Mistakes or lack of verification here can block the transfer of your refund.
What Should You Do?
-
Always e-verify your ITR promptly.
-
Double-check your PAN and Aadhaar linkage and document details.
-
Match all income and tax details across Form 16, Form 26AS, and AIS.
-
Claim deductions only if you have the supporting documents.
-
Ensure your bank account details are correct, active, and verified.
