Bhubaneswar: National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Bhubaneswar, paid a tribute to Odisha’s rich cultural heritage by presenting Idital paintings, traditional wall murals created by the Lanjia Saura community of Rayagada district, to guests at its 14th Convocation Ceremony.
Officially recognized with GI status in January 2024, Idital paintings reflect the region’s indigenous artistry and storytelling traditions.
Minister of State for External Affairs and Minister of State for Ministry of Textile Pabitra Margherita was the chief guest of the ceremony, which was also attended by Dean (Academics) Dr Noopur Anand, , Shri Rajpal Singh Arora of Kalamandir Fashions, Bhubaneswar, as Guest of Honour, and NIFT Bhubaneswar, director Rajesh Kumar Jha.
Faculty members, alumni, parents, and eminent industry leaders were also present at the convocation, reflecting the spirit and accomplishments of the young graduates who are poised to enter the dynamic world of fashion, design, technology, and management.
In his keynote address, Margherita commended the graduates for their creativity, resilience, and innovative spirit, encouraging them to carry forward the legacy of NIFT and contribute meaningfully to Vikshit Bharat stature in the global fashion and design landscape. He took the opportunity to shed light on the tireless efforts of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji and Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh, in their pursuit to create a vibrant and self-reliant Bharat.
He spoke passionately about the government’s initiatives that have transformed various sectors, including the “Make in India” campaign, which has not only encouraged indigenous production but also positioned India as a global hub.
He concluded his address with a heartfelt message in Odia, earning resounding applause from the audience.
This year, 189 students received their degrees, diplomas, and awards across a range of disciplines including Fashion Design, Textile Design, Fashion Communication, Fashion & Lifestyle Accessories, Fashion Technology, and Fashion Management. The Institute also conferred special Graduation Awards such as: NIFT Best Academic Performance Award, NIFT Extraordinary Service Award, NIFT Student of the Year Award and various Graduation and Meritorious awards. In a special gesture, tribal students from Odisha were also felicitated, recognising their achievements and contributions.
Anand, the esteemed Dean of NIFT, led the graduating batch through a special oath-taking ceremony, symbolizing their commitment to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and innovation in the global fashion industry.
NIFT director general Tanu Kashyap wished each one of them a fulfilling & joyful life.
Speaking on the occasion, NIFT Bhubaneswar director expressed immense pride in the graduating class. “The 2025 batch embodies the spirit of creativity and collaboration. They are equipped not only with design excellence but also with a strong sense of responsibility towards sustainability, inclusivity, and innovation,” he said, highlighting the institute’s progressive journey and commitment to academic and industry excellence.
Arora emphasised the importance of perseverance and creativity in the face of challenges, urging the graduates to lead with both vision and courage.
An exhibition of graduating students’ work was showcased as a part of the celebration.
