BBC News exploded into a fiery clash as presenter Christian Fraser was confronted live on-air by Lord George Foulkes over the broadcaster's "biased" coverage of Angela Rayner's sacking. The Labour Peer fumed that the BBC needs to "be looked at" as he insisted Reform UK leader Nigel Farage "isn't under the same scrutiny".
Things kicked off when Foulkes fumed: "You really need to be looking at fulfilling your charter and giving equal coverage and equal challenge and equal questioning to people like Nigel Farage, as you're doing to people in the Labour Party!" Fraser tried to take control of the situation, hitting back: "Well you are on the show at the moment, so let me question you about the future of the party-" but was quickly interrupted.
The Peer said: "You all seem very happy that you've hounded out a very able minister. Led by the right-wing press but sadly supported by the BBC."
Fraser explained: "Well not my judgement, it's the judgement of Sir Laurie Magnus! The facts- the facts were established. He said, 'After this intensive public scrutiny which leads me to conclude she was in breach of the ministerial code'. Without that scrutiny, Mr Foulkes, she wouldn't have come clean!"
Foulkes said: "And you were part of that intensive public scrutiny. But he also said that she acted with integrity, and can I remind you that Priti Patel, Liz Truss, Robert Jenrick and Boris Johnson all broke the ministerial code. How many of those resigned as a result?"
Fraser hit back: "And when they did [Rayner] said, 'It is one rule for the rest of them and one rule for us!'" He added: "Has Labour not hounded out politicians for discretions before?"
He then went on: "Mr Foulkes, I know you would prefer us not to talk about Angela Rayner, I'm very happy to engage with you on Nigel Farage but I want to talk about Angela Rayner, that is why you're here!"
Foulkes exploded: "No you're only talking about things that Labour people do wrong! And this was all ferreted out by the Daily Telegraph... Why don't you do the same with other people?" as Fraser insisted: "We do!"
The argument was far from over, as Foulkes repeated: "Nigel Farage is leader of a party and he needs the same kind of scrutiny. You're not giving them the same kind of scrutiny." Fraser went on to insist: "When I'm sitting in the chair he gets the same kind of scrutiny. Let me ask you-"
Cutting him off in a brutal moment, Foulkes said: "The BBC really need to be looked at, you really need to look at yourselves and consider whether or not you are treating parties fairly. You are giving prominence again and again to Farage, you cover his press conferences- He is just a snake oil salesman. "
"We get the same message on the hard right as well," Fraser said simply - putting an end to the argument.
