Drivers are being warned that fallen autumn leaves on car windscreens could result in a £1,000 fine and penalty points on licences.
It is quite common for drivers to negelect the task of clearing fallen leaves from their windscreens. However, experts at Quotezone, a car insurance comparison website, are now urging drivers to keep their vehicles free from any leaves and debris, as not doing so can restrict visibility and create dangerous driving conditions.
Greg Wilson, Quotezone CEO and car insurance expert, said: "While clearing leaves usually only takes a few minutes, it's easy to skip when you're in a hurry in the morning, leaving windscreens and windows partially obstructed.
"What many drivers don't realise is that something as simple as not clearing your windscreen could land you with a hefty fine and even points on your licence."
Annex 6 of the Highway Code states that windscreens and windows must be kept clean and free of obstructions. Motorists who drive without having a full view of the road and traffic ahead can be issued with a £100 on-the-spot fine and three penality pints. If the pentalty is challenge in court, it can reach up to £1,000.
Not only that but breaching the rule can also invalidate car insurance which, if involved in an accident, could leave motorists face huge financial losses.
Leaves aren't just a safety issue; they can also damage the exterior of your car. Wet leaves left on car paintwork can cause rust and damage the finish as they can trap moisture and acidic sap.
In addition to clearing windscreens and windows, drivers must check under the bonnet for leaf build-up as it can block drainage channels and lead to expensive repairs. Debris should also be cleared from number plates so they are clearly readable, obstructions can lead to hefty fines.
Mr Wilson added: "Giving yourself a few extra minutes to clear the car before setting off could save you from serious financial headaches later on and help keep all road users safe this autumn."
