was halted for a devastating breaking news announcement as a migrant has been killed trying to cross the English Channel. Ben Leo announced: "Some breaking news this last couple of a minutes, a migrant has died in the English Channel in an attempt to cross this morning." Sophie Reaper added: "The body was brought to Dover harbour alongside dozens of other migrants." Ben jumped in: "A quick warning, some of a footage you're about to see may be distressing, Mark White joins us for the latest."
The show then welcomed Home and Security Editor Mark White onto the show as he gave them the latest information, with harrowing footage of crew bringing the body into Dover Harbour, with police tape around and officers patrolling the area. Mark revealed that the vessel Hurrican bringing over the migrants should have just been a standard unloading, but it soon became clear that they were bringing over a body as reporters looked on.
The Border Force team brought over 51 migrants before the vessel Hurricane moved to the Dover RNLI station. UN agency International Organisation for Migration tracks the number of people who died attempting to cross the Channel and estimated that at least 78 migrants died in 2024, the deadliest year on record. 11 people have died so far this year.
The cause of death is yet to be confirmed, but previous deaths have been attributed to drowning, being the majority of deaths, but with increasing numbers of crushing and suffocation on vessels that have been overcrowded.
Mark also said there have been reportings of stabbings on boats as migrants fight their way to get onto the vessels to cross over to Dover.
A Home Office spokesman said: "We all want to end dangerous small boat crossings, which threaten lives and undermine our border security.
"That's with this Government is investing in border security, increasing returns to their highest levels for more than half a decade, and imposing a major crackdown on illegal working to end the false promise of jobs, used by gangs to sell spaces on boats."
