Autumn is the best time to fertilise a lawn so it stays strong throughout the freezing cold weather, and you can easily make your own natural feed without spending any money. Lawns need to fertilised now in mid-October as it will need time to soak into the soil, and if you leave it too late the ground will freeze so the fertiliser will not be very effective.
It is incredibly important to feed grass now as the roots need to become resilient enough to fight off frost, disease and any pests that can eat away at a lawn during the winter months. Andrew Huber, an gardening expert from The Lawn Squad, has revealed making a homemade fertiliser will help a stay healthy so it will naturally turn "beautifully-green" once spring arrives next year. He said: "Ever wondered how to get that lush, deep green lawn without breaking the bank? I've got the scoop on DIY lawn care that'll turn your yard into the envy of the neighbourhood."
Leftover grounds from coffee contain a lot of nitrogen, which one of the most important nutrient lawns need to stay strong.
Nitrogen helps support chlorophyll production, which will improve photosynthesis and will help the grass grows much thicker soil stays protected from cold damage.
Coffee grounds also attract lots of earthworms to a lawn to aerate the soil, so the roots can absorb more nutrients and store more energy to keep them healthy.
Andrew said: "Nitrogen-rich coffee grounds can be sprinkled on the lawn or mixed with water (about half a pound of coffee grounds to five gallons of water) to create a nutrient-packed lawn tonic."
By themselves, coffee grounds do not contain all the nutrients a lawn needs but they are fantastic help grass become much more resistant to weeds and disease.

Gardeners will be relived to hear they can save some time this autumn as there is no need to pick up grass clippings after mowing, as they are rich in the main nutrients a lawns need that you feed back into the ground.
Andrew said: "Simply leave them on the lawn to decompose and they'll feed your lawn as they break down"
Grass clippings will turn into a thin layer of mulch that will insulate the soil to protect it and also retain some moisture, so you do not have to keep watering a lawn regularly in autumn.
However, it is important to note that should you only use short grass clippings, so run them over with a mower a few times if they seem too long.
Long grass will hold too much water and takes ages to decompose, which can smother a lawn and spread weeds rather than give it the nutrients it needs to thrive.

Washing up liquid is technically not a fertiliser as it does not add any nutrients to the soil, but it contains surfactant that will penetrate deeply into the soil to ensure a lawn is fed properly.
A lot of natural feeds will only brush against the grass and not actually reach the roots so are not very effective, but when mixed with water they will get deep into a lawn to spread a fertiliser evenly.
Andrew said: "It helps other nutrients penetrate the soil more effectively, [and] it can also help control certain pests."
It is also a natural insecticide as it will kill off critters that tend to feed on lawns in wintertime such as mites, and it is also one of the best natural ways to get rid of moss on grass.
However, you only need a small amount of washing up liquid for it to work properly and it should always be diluted in water otherwise it wil harm the grass rather than help it.

Most gardeners might not know what Epsom salts are, but they are a natural substance often used in bath soaks, and are great to use on lawns as they contain nutrients that can give lawns more energy.
Andrew said: "Epsom salts are rich in magnesium and sulphur, two key nutrients that can help seed germination, chlorophyll production, and the absorption of other nutrient"
Magnesium helps give lawns their deep green colour so will help restore yellowing or pale grass, while also helping the overall health of its root system.
Sulphur is the nutrient that help improve plant metabolism and will help grass absorb nutrients so they are more effective.
They simply help improve the soil quality of a lawn so the roots can grow deeper and stay protected, so you are more likely to have a greener and much healthier lawn next year in spring.
