
There were huge delays on the M11 on Thursday afternoon following a vehicle hire. The incident on the motorway occurred near Junction 9 on the southbound carriageway near Saffron Walden - a mile after the junction with the A11.
Traffic had been rapidly building between junctions 8 and 9 with the A120 and Stansted Airport, with two miles of congestion. Traffic also slowed between junctions eight and nine with the A120 and Stansted Airport.
The incident has now been cleared, according to National Highways which warned drivers that delays are continuing.
In an update at 12.16, the government agency said: "This incident has now cleared, and traffic has been released on the #M11 southbound in #Essex between J9 (#GreatChesterford) and J8 (@STN_Airport).
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said in a statement: "Crews were called to an incident on M11 Junction 9 to Junction 8 Southbound at 10.52am.
"On arrival, firefighters confirmed it was one car on fire. Crews extinguished it and made the scene safe by 11.26am."
