The Met Office hs issued new yellow weather warnings as the UK braces for horror downpours over the coming hours. This is in addition to several 14-hour weather warnings for rain already issued by the national forecasater in place for today, covering large parts of England and Wales.

The new warnings are in place for Grampian, and Central, Tayside & Fife in Scotland, running from 12pm today until 9pm this evening. The Met Office has warned Britons to expect a "slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses", while there is also a "small chance" homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings". In addition, where flooding does occur, there is a "slight chance" of delays or cancellations to train and bus services. Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures, while there is also a "small chance" that some communities will become cut off by flooded roads.

The Met Office warns: "Rain will become increasingly persistent later this morning onwards through this afternoon when rain will become heavy at times. 15 to 30 mm or rain is likely to fall quite widely, with a small chance of a few spots seeing as much as 50 to 80 mm rain, most likely near the coast."

Rebekah Hicks, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office said: "We're expecting a band of heavy rain and strong winds to move northeast through the first part of Wednesday, followed by heavy showers and the risk of thunderstorms. Some of these could bring hail and gusty winds, particularly in southern areas.

"Of course, the warning coincides with the first school run after the summer holidays for some, meaning a wet and potentially disruptive start to the day for many."

The Met Office warned rainfall totals are expected to reach 20-30mm widely, with 40-60mm possible in some areas over a 6-to-9-hour period. Conditions will gradually improve from the southwest through Wednesday afternoon as showers become more isolated.
