Ozzy Osbourne has done it all with his extraordinary life. A rockstar in every sense of the word, Ozzy lived through numerous ups and downs on and off the stage.
But up until his final days, he had yet to tick off one item of his bucket list. That all changed once his farewell concert with Black Sabbath ended. The final bow, at Villa Park in the band's hometown of Birmingham, featured a number of rock and metal royalty performing to honour the Prince of Darkness and his band's incredible impact on music.
Once the lights went down, Ozzy finally managed to live out a dream when he met a legendary singer - surprisingly, for the very first time. Despite their similar influence on the hard rock scene, the pair had never crossed paths.
But a meeting of two music superpowers proved to mean a lot to Ozzy, as he celebrated finally coming face-to-face with Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose. The two met during the monumental 'Back to the Beginning' super show in Birmingham, marking Black Sabbath's final performance with Ozzy.
At the age of 76, Ozzy had the chance to meet "legend" Axl backstage and took to Instagram to express his delight, posting a photo of their handshake. He captioned it: "My first time meeting Axl Rose, at my age you don't get to meet many legends, seriously an utter gentleman."
Fans were thrilled as Ozzy also shared a snapshot with both Axl and iconic GnR guitarist Slash, causing quite a stir in the comments. Axl reciprocated by sharing his own excitement on social media about the event.
He wrote: "Wow!! What an EVENT!! Extremely overwhelming!!
"Really great crowd!! Was very emotional for everyone!! MET OZZY!! (Crazy we'd never met b4!!) He was really great!! Was great to meet Sabbath!!
"Was hard as I imagine for anyone to watch his struggles while at the same time everyone was rooting for him n' massively respecting the challenges he took head on n' HE DID IT!!!!
"Was great to meet Ozzy's family n' see friends n' peeps in all the bands n' the business. A HUGE THANK YOU again to Ozzy, Sharon, Black Sabbath n' all the fans for having us!!"
During their electrifying performance, Guns N' Roses honoured Black Sabbath with renditions of their iconic songs before belting out their own smash hits, 'Welcome to the Jungle' and 'Paradise City'.
The concert marked a poignant moment for Ozzy's followers as they witnessed what was billed as his last live performance. The music legend's health struggles were apparent, prompting fans to support him throughout the show.
Sadly, just seventeen days later, Ozzy died while "surrounded by family". A statement from wife Sharon and his children Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis read: "It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning.
"He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time."
Fellow rock legends have also paid their respects and celebrated Ozzy's indelible influence on the genre. Since the news broke, Elton John, Motorhead, Metallica, Rod Stewart, representatives of Nirvana and more have all shared heartfelt messages in memory of the singer.
Pearl Jam's Mike McCready said: "Ozzy's voice that took me away to a dark universe. A great escape."
Heavy metal rock band Metallica also shared an old photo of themselves with Ozzy backstage at one of their shows. In addition to the snap, the group also shared a video performing with the rockstar at Metallica's 30th Anniversary Show at The Fillmore in San Fransisco, California.
Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello, who worked as musical director at Ozzy's farewell show, wrote, "God bless you Ozzy." Meanwhile, Green Day frontman Billie Joel Armstrong shared a sweet but simple message on Instagram as he wrote, "No words. We love you Ozzy."
