Steven Gerrard is eyeing former England coach Steve Holland for a role in his Rangers backroom team, should he secure the managerial position. Gerrard is currently in London for discussions with Ibrox chiefs Andrew Cavenagh, Paraag Marathe and Gretar Steinsson about a sensational potential return to Glasgow.
The 45-year-old Liverpool legend has been identified as the prime candidate by the Rangers' hierarchy to replace the recently sacked Russell Martin. These talks are expected to continue over the next 24 hours as Gerrard contemplates a second stint as manager. If an agreement is reached, the Daily Record have revealed that Gerrard will target Holland for a coaching role at Ibrox. The 55-year-old served as Gareth Southgate's deputy with the Three Lions for eight years, aiding them in reaching two European Championship finals.
Holland, who previously worked at Chelsea, has been unemployed since April this year following his dismissal by Japanese club Yokohama Marinos. However, if Gerrard does make a comeback to Rangers, Holland could potentially join him at Ibrox.
Gerrard revealed on Rio Ferdinand's podcast earlier this week that he would like a fresh team around him if he returns to management. He stated: "I haven't been ready because I haven't got that (coaching) team set around me.
"And the timing hasn't been right. But if the right call comes my way, the right club, the right challenge - and I've got my people set which I'll have at some point - I'll take that challenge on because it's in me."
"I felt like I had that to a tee at Rangers (with Gary McAllister, Michael Beale and Tom Culshaw). I'd love another go at some point. I want to change a few things and improve a few things then come back fresh with different people around me.
"I'd love another couple of challenges and that's what I'm working on in the background at the moment. A few different ideas, a few different people around me."
Another name linked with Rangers is legendary midfielder Steven Davis. He's currently working alongside Northern Ireland national team boss Michael O'Neill and previously had a spell as Ibrox interim gaffer.
But as it stands, Davis hasn't yet been approached about a role at his former club. Gerrard remains in discussions with Rangers regarding the managerial position following exploratory talks in London yesterday.
He's made it clear he wants to understand how the club's new American owners operate before committing to a comeback.
Gerrard spent three and a half years in Govan previously, securing the club's 55th title in 2021, before departing for Aston Villa.
Rangers' hierarchy have other managerial contenders in their sights to potentially replace sacked Martin - but Gerrard remains their primary target.
