A beautiful train has been named the best luxury journey across Europe. The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express won Europe's Leading Luxury Train at the World Travel Awards.
It beat out three UK-based Belmond trains (Britannic Explorer, British Pullman, and Royal Scotsman) as well as ones in Spain (El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo), Italy (La Dolce Vita Orient Express), and cross-Europe (Golden Eagle Danube Express). It has won the award every year since 2011 and has been nominated for World's Leading Luxury Train this year. There are 42 routes available across central Europe, many of which start in Paris and go to Portofino, Istanbul, Budapest, Prague, Florence, and Vienna. Other trips include Brussels to Verona and Amsterdam to Venice. The train is made up of meticulously restored 1920s dining cars, which have, depending on the journey, views of the Ligurian coast, the Austrian mountains, romantic cities, and more.
On offer is a range of accommodations, including L'Observatoire, an entire carriage available for exclusive use, featuring a secret tearoom, marble bathroom, and 24-hour service.
There is also grand suites (£11,180 per person), suites (£8,785 per person), and historic cabins (£3,530 per person),. Grand suites and suites have private bathrooms but cabins share a bathroom, with one in for the eight cabins in each sleeper carriage.
Breakfast can be served either in your cabin or in the dining carriages, with smoked salmon, eggs, truffles, caviar, and mimosas on offer.
Lunch is three courses of "freshly prepared dishes using locally sourced ingredients", accompanied by a bottle of wine chosen by the sommelier.
In the afternoon, there is high tea and in the early evening, aperitifs are served. Then it is the three-course dinner, followed by drinks in the grand bar car. If you're still hungry in the early hours, there is a midnight brunch with lobster rolls, truffled club sandwiches and champagne.
Prices to travel on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express range from £3,530 for the one night journey from Venice to Paris, to £18,050 for the five night journey from Paris to Istanbul.
