A beautiful tiny city that's the furthest place from any other motorway in England is home to the UK's 'best' fish and chips. The pairing of fish and chips has long been considered a quintessential British staple ,with the golden fried combo so deeply entrenched in our culture since the 19th century.

Those looking for the most codtastic chippy should look no further than Truro, located in Cornwall. Don't be deceived by its pint-size as the city is bursting with historic Gothic and Georgian architecture, an array of independent shops and the humble British staple of fish and chips. With only a population of 20,000, it is one of the smallest cities on the list behind St David's in Pembrokeshire.

Earlier this year, the prestigious National Fish and Chip Awards announced Kellaway's Fish and Chips on Pengelly Way in Truro had made the semi-finals in becoming the 2026 Takeaway of the Year recipient.

The dream of being given this title is edging closer. It is making waves in the national spotlight and securing a coveted spot among the top 20 contenders.

Last year, the chippy came within touching distance of being crowned the winner after they came third in the National Fish & Chip Awards 2025.

Proud holders of a five-star food hygiene rating, the establishment sells all of the classic chippy favourites.

Their extensive menu features your classic cod and chips with scampi, roe and hake also available. There is something for everyone as Kellaway's also serves up burgers, garlic mushrooms and family feasts.

"There's nowhere to hide when a chippy puts itself forward for the National Fish & Chip Awards." says Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), which organises the annual ceremony.

He adds: "Fish and chips hold such a special place in peoples' hearts and it's our responsibility to provide steer so that things stay that way and these fantastic 20 semi-finalists are great ambassadors for why it's loved so much."

Not only is Truro home to an amazing chippy, but it is also the furthest place from a motorway in England. The M5 in Exeter is a whopping 92 miles away, and it takes over an hour and a half to reach.

Once you arrive in Exeter, you will need to follow Cornwall's road network to the beautiful city.

You can either take the A30 over Bodmin Moor or the A38 via Plymouth and Truro. This can be accessed from the A30 junction Carland Cross, A39 or further on the A30 to Chiverton roundabout at the A391.
