The Lake District is often seen as one of the most beautiful parts of Britain, if not the most beautiful of all. Among many things, the scenic national park in Cumbria is packed with breathtaking views, crystal-clear lakes, and peaceful walking routes. It's also home to England's tallest mountain and a few charming market towns.
One of them is Keswick - a small but busy town that sits right next to Scafell Pike. With England's highest peak just a 10-minute drive away, it's a popular base for those climbing the mountain from the Borrowdale valley. The starting point at Seathwaite is less than seven miles from the town centre.

Gary Lovatt, the chair of Keswick Tourism Association, described it as "the jewel in the crown of the Northern Lakes", and said it's easy to see why so many people choose to stay there.
He told the Express: "Keswick's appeal largely stems from its stunning scenery, which attracts walkers, climbers, and cyclists from across the country.
"The nearby Catbells and Skiddaw fells present spectacular hiking opportunities, with panoramic views that reward every effort. Latrigg boasts one of the finest views in the Lake District for the height climbed.
"The serene waters of Derwentwater invite boating, kayaking, paddle boarding and even wild swimming for those brave enough to face the chilly depths."
Beyond its outdoor allure, Keswick also has a lively market town atmosphere.

Its pedestrianised Market Square is full of independent shops, galleries, pubs and cafés, and holds a busy market twice a week.
Stalls sell everything from local produce and Cumbrian delicacies to crafts.
Mr Lovatt said: "The town hosts many small independent businesses and that is part of its charm. No McDonald's and Ubers here."
At the centre of the square is the Moot Hall. It's a historic building that now houses the Lake District National Park tourist information centre and is an excellent starting point for planning adventures.
Nearby parks like Hope Park and Fitz Park offer crazy golf, children's play areas and riverside picnic spots, while the lake is only a short stroll from the town centre.
From there, visitors can hire boats or take the launch service around Derwentwater.
Keswick also has plenty of culture, including the Keswick Museum and Art Gallery and the Theatre by the Lake, which hosts a range of performances throughout the year.
Just outside the town is Castlerigg Stone Circle, one of the oldest in Britain, with views stretching across the surrounding fells.
Mr Lovatt said: "Whether you are drawn by adventure, tranquillity, or culture, Keswick's unique blend of natural wonders and warm hospitality ensures an unforgettable visit to the heart of Cumbria."
At the same time, he stressed: "Remember this town not only has a tourist function. It is where people come to work or to retire. It is a community and alongside this a fragile ecosystem."
He also shared some important advice for those planning to go hiking, saying: "If you are going out on the mountains, please make sure you are fully equipped for the trip.
"The local mountain rescue team (who are all unpaid volunteers) are here to assist you in your hour of need, but are always busy, so try not to add to the list.
"Please be mindful of the people that work and live here and the livestock. We just ask two things: take only photographs and leave only footprints."
As far as accommodation is concerned, there's a wide range of places to stay in Keswick, from traditional guesthouses to luxury hotels, and plenty of pubs and cafés serving everything from traditional fare to contemporary cuisine.
The town also has one of the best selections of outdoor gear shops in the country, which is ideal for anyone planning a walk up Scafell Pike.
At 3,209 feet (978m), Scafell Pike is the tallest mountain in England and can be reached from Seathwaite in around six to eight hours, depending on your pace and the route you take.
The area is popular with experienced walkers, and local mountain rescue teams are on standby, but visitors are advised to plan ahead and be careful.
