Homeowners across the UK are being warned to take urgent action as winter approaches, or risk serious damage to their property. The colder months bring heavy rain, strong winds, and freezing temperatures, all of which can lead to expensive repairs if homes aren't properly maintained. Water damage, cracked patios, damp basements and roof problems are just some of the issues that could arise in the coming weeks.
But experts say one key task is often overlooked, despite being essential to keeping homes safe and dry through the winter. Failing to do it now could allow water to pool around your house, seep into the walls or foundations, and cause long-term structural issues. In some cases, it could even lead to sagging gutters, rotted roof edges, or flooding in basements and lofts.
Experts at Streamline Guttering and Cladding have warned that the simple job of clearing out your gutters could prevent much of this damage.
They said: "Cleaning your gutters before winter can help prevent costly repairs, such as rotted fascia boards, cracked walkways or patios, and water damage to your basement."
Gutters blocked with leaves, twigs, or dirt can stop water draining properly. When temperatures drop, trapped water can freeze, forming ice dams that push water back under roof tiles and into ceilings.
The extra weight of frozen debris can also cause gutters to sag, break away from the wall, or fall down completely.
And it's not just the structure of your home that's at risk. Experts say clogged gutters can also create the perfect damp conditions for mould, mildew and pests.
Dark, wet corners full of decaying matter can attract rodents, insects and birds, especially in winter when they're looking for shelter.
Mould spores can then spread into roof spaces and attics, triggering health problems for anyone with asthma or allergies.
The experts say the best time to clear your gutters is in autumn, before the worst of the weather arrives.
For homes surrounded by trees, a second clean later in the season may be needed.
As well as removing debris, a proper clean allows for a full inspection of the guttering system.
This includes checking that brackets are secure, seals are tight, and fascia boards aren't starting to rot.
If left blocked, water can overflow and start to collect around the base of the house, weakening the soil and damaging the foundations.
In some cases, this can cause cracks to form in patios, paths, or basement walls, and repairs can cost thousands of pounds.
The experts added: "Regular gutter cleaning can save homeowners time and money by preventing damage caused by winter storms. Wind, snow, and ice can cause significant damage to homes, leading to costly repairs."
Experts say a ladder, gloves and a garden hose are usually all that's needed to do the job. But if your home is more than one storey high, it's safer to hire a professional.
