LeBron James ’ recent feud with ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith sent the sports world into a frenzy that veered far from the hardwood. Patrick Beverley compared LeBron James to Barack Obama

Patrick Beverley, who shared the court with LeBron James during the 2022-2023 NBA season, didn’t hesitate when he recently spoke out on the Los Angeles Lakers veteran’s feud with Stephen A. Smith. Beverley also elevates him with one of the most powerful comparisons yet.

“He’s the Black Captain America , bro—literally the Black Captain America. He’s probably the most powerful African-American out there. Besides Barack Obama. One of the most powerful men in the world,” Beverley said duing a recent episode of the Pat Bev Pod.

Beverley’s comment came in the wake of a week-long media firestorm where LeBron and Stephen A. Smith engaged in a heated back-and-forth. The feud peaked when James addressed the controversy on The Pat McAfee Show, revealing his frustration over how the conversation shifted from basketball to personal attacks.

“He completely missed the whole point,” James said. “Never would I ever not allow people to talk about the sport, criticize players about what they do on the court. That is your job, to criticize. But when you take it and when you get personal with it, it’s my job to not only protect my damn household but protect the players.”

The confrontation reportedly began when LeBron approached Smith courtside during a Lakers-Knicks game in March. James, in his own words, simply wanted to address what he felt were personal jabs from Smith, but the moment snowballed into headline fodder. Smith, never one to back down, claimed he would’ve “immediately” swung at James had there been any physical contact—before admitting, “I would have gotten my (expletive) kicked.”

James, in turn, responded with an Instagram post mocking old footage of Smith boxing. The caption? A string of laughing emojis and the phrase: “WHOMP WHOMP WHOMPPPPPPPP.”

As the feud continued to gain steam, Smith went on to accuse LeBron of lying during his McAfee appearance, declaring on First Take: “LeBron James went on national television and lied.”

Amid the noise, Beverley shared how quickly the narrative turned hostile, describing the pile-on as “slander LeBron day” and calling out the media for their opportunism.

“It got kinda girly and tattletale-ish… After it went down, it seemed like everyone just wanted a piece of him,” Beverley said.
