Russia attacks prison in Ukraine: At least 17 inmates killed; Kyiv calls it 'war crime'

Russia struck a prison in Ukraine’s southeastern Zaporizhzhia region late Monday(local time), killing at least 17 inmates and injuring more than 80 others.

Russia used four guided aerial bombs to target Bilenkivska Correctional colony , according to the State Criminal Executive Service of Ukraine, reported AP.

At least 42 inmates were hospitalized with serious injuries. Another 40 people, including one prison staff member, suffered varying degrees of injuries.

At least four civilians were reportedly killed and eight injured in Dnipro region.

Ukrainian officials condemned the attack on civilian infrastructure, stating that hitting a prison constitutes a war crime under international conventions.

Officials confirmed that the prison’s dining hall was destroyed, while administrative and quarantine buildings suffered damage. The prison’s outer fence remained intact, and no prisoners escaped, authorities confirmed.
